Introducing Scientist - Analei

Analei is a year 8 Scientist.  She researched all about pimples and if natural or man-made products are best to cure them.  Analei though that natural products would be better.  Was she right?  Yes, she was.
Analei discovered it is dangerous to use man made products especially toothpaste as this can make your pimples worse.  So her suggestions are Garlic, Cucumber, Oats, baking Soda, Tea tree oil, plain yoghurt and eggs.

Great job Analei!

Introducing Scientists- Angela and Nira

Angela and Nira love plants!  These young scientists worked hard on their project.  The girls are both Year 5 and this project took them 4 weeks to complete.  Their experiment concluded that plants do better with light.  It was great to see the girls bring the plants they grew for this experiment so we could see for ourselves that yes, plants really do need light.  Malo Lava!

Introducing Scientist - David

David is a year 5 Scientist who wanted to know if it is possible to form a cloud in a bottle.  He had to do plenty of research about weather and find out how clouds are formed.  David found out that clouds are important and we need them!  Well done David!

Introducing Scientist - Joshua H

Joshua displayed his project in such an original way – it actually looked like a tree, with all his information hanging off like branches.  He researched about the effect of sunlight on plants.  He wanted to show that plants can grow in the dark but will eventually die.  What a wonderful project Joshua and many people admired your display!

Introducing Scientist - Soon-ae

Soon-ae is a year 5 Student.  Her Science Fair project showed which material burns the fastest.  Soon-ae researched the difference between paper, cardboard, wood, fabric and polyethylene.  Using an old pot she carefully burnt and timed how long it took before there was just ashes in the pot.

With Global warming a problem, Soon-ae has shown that burning materials takes time , so think of other ways to get rid of rubbish! great work Soon-ae!

Introducing Scientist - Frank

Frank won the most original award for the year 5 section.  Frank is now an expert on the PH Scale and is familiar with words like acid, base and neutral.  He wanted to know what house hold liquids are acidic, neutral or basic.  He then had to get a red cabbage to carry out this experiment.  Well done Frank you carried out the Scientific method and showed your results.  What an interesting project.

Introducing Scientists - Sierra and Tahlia

These Year 5 Scientists were placed third with their entry about Floating and Sinking.  They researched if the size of boats with different lengths, widths, height and volume would hold more weight.  The girls said this project was challenging at times.  These young girls could be future engineers and we hope they don’t forget their time at Vaiala Beach School - where it all started!

Introducing Scientist - Timara

Timara, a year 5 Scientist wanted to find out if hot water freezes faster than cold water.  She enjoyed completing this experiment and had lots of fun.  Her experiment included getting 1 cup of hot water in a bowl and then 1 cup of cold water.  She then placed the bowls in the freezer on the same shelf.  Now this is the interesting part, the bowl with the hot water froze faster.  Why?  You might ask, well Timara will be able to explain to you all about the Mpemba effect.  So next time you are filling up the ice tray, use hot water and you will have ice faster.  How interesting!!

Introducing Scientist - Isabella

Isabella is a year 5 Scientist who investigated if everyday items like vinegar and baking soda will be enough to blow up a balloon.  This experiment showed that a chemical reaction is formed and it is enough to blow up the balloon.  You could try this at home by putting the balloon over a bottle with the vinegar and baking soda inside the bottle.  Isabella went a step further and had some fun with food colouring and liquid soap which then showed the normally invisible gas.  Malo Lava Isabella!

Introducing Scientists - Juno and Jade

Juno and Jade are both Year 5 students.  They wanted to prove if what they saw on Google and You-Tube about a Potato powering a clock was really true.  The Scientists made the clock and it worked!  This led them to further research that most other vegetables can also be used for batteries.  The best fruit is a lemon.  Fantastic effort girls!

Introducing Scientist - Cruz

Are all apples created equal?  Cruz a Scientist in the Year 5 class wanted to find out if red apples are toughest or is it green?  His experiment sounded fun as he had to go outside and throw the apples against a wall.  He had to take care he was using the same amount of force behind each throw.  Cruz had to count how many pieces the apple was split into after the throw.  What apple do you think was the toughest, well maybe Granny Smith Apples should be called Super-Granny Smith Apples because Cruz proved that the green apples are the toughest.

Introducing Scientist - Mahinarangi

Mahinarangi is a year 5 student and she really enjoyed completing her Science fair project.  She had a rather fun experiment to do which was going to test if water can actually ‘walk’.  Mahina had to take great care with this experiment and be careful not to spill the food colouring all over the table!  Maybe you could try this experiment at home, you will need 7 glasses, 6 paper towels and food colouring.  It does look like fun!

Introducing Scientists - Jonathan and James

These two Year 5 students picked a real fun topic.  They wanted to see which paper plane design flies further.  They had to research different paper plane designs and then follow the instructions carefully to make them.  The boys picked the Dart Plane, Arrow Plane and the Moth Plane. James and Jonathan remind you to pick up a topic that you are interested in as it makes the Science Fair fun.

Introducing Scientist - Arthur Joseph (AJ)

AJ is a Year 5 scientist who needed to use a timer for her experiment.  He was curious to discover the length of time that it takes for ice to completely melt.  He placed ice inside, outside and the microwave.  AJ researched about temperature and found out that temperature is the measurement of how hot or cold something is.  AJ presented his results using graphs.

Introducing Scientist - Eve

Can you imagine having to count out 1,200 popcorn seeds?  Eve can because she had to do it!  Eve wanted to know where the best place to store popcorn seeds is.  She placed some in the fridge, some in the freezer and then left some in the cupboard.  The good thing about this experiment was she then had to taste the popcorn.  During her research she found out that each popcorn seed has a small drop of water stored inside.  During her experiment she discovered that the best place to store popcorn seeds is actually not the cupboard like most people think but the fridge.  How interesting!

Introducing Scientist - Ake

Ake did a wonderful job with her project.  This young year 5 student has a long drive to school every morning from Lalomanu but she doesn’t let that stop her learning.  Ake was awarded Highly Commended for her great project.  She presented her findings and the clear photos on her display showed her experiment.  Congratulations Ake, you should be very proud of your effort at the Science fair.

Introducing Scientist - Joshua G

Joshua is a year 5 Scientist who researched chemical reactions.  He wanted to know what mix of vinegar and baking soda make the most carbon dioxide.  To do this he needed a balloon, vinegar and baking soda.  Joshua did a wonderful job showing his results, first in a table and he then transferred this information into a graph.  He had to measure the circumference of the balloon.  What a great effort Joshua, I wonder what topic you will pick next year!

Introducing Scientist - Oliver

Oliver, a year 5 student researched all about gravity.  He found out that gravity is a force pulling together all matter (which is anything you can touch).  He then dropped from the veranda -  a rock, water and stuffing in empty milk cartons.  Oliver needed some help here from Dad to record the amount of time it took for each carton to land.  Hopefully there wasn’t anyone walking under the veranda when Oliver went to drop the rock!  What an interesting topic Oliver.  Well done!

Introducing Scientist - Olive

How you ever wanted to remove rust?  Well Olive asked which acidic liquid can remove coin rust better in three days.  She compared distilled white vinegar and Coca-Cola.  Olive had to research all about PH levels.  She even found out that phosphoric acid is put in Coca-Cola to give it that tangy flavour.  Olive did a marvelous job on this experiment.  She took photos of the coins and display board was awesome.  Olive found out that Coca-Cola removed the rust the fastest.  Thanks Olive, I think you have inspired people to rethink about drinking Coca-Cola as if it can remove rust from a coin then imagine what it is doing to your insides!

Introducing Scientist - Dess

Dess is a young scientist who is year 5.  Dess made a wonderful project all about Plants needing sunlight to grow.  His experiment took him 7 weeks to complete.  What was really great about this project was that he displayed it in such an easy way to follow.  His project was very eye-catching.  The judges thought so and he was  awarded 2nd place in his section.  Malo lava Dess!
